When shopping for a TV there are a few things you should take in to account before jumping at any one product. Screen type is one of the most important aspects of a TV, and defines its price and also ability to handle media playback. Across the current television market, the most common types of display type currently are:
Plasma; Plasma TV’s kicked off the flat screen revolution and are still being sold by the bucket load across the UK. Slightly thicker and heavier than LCD and LED TV’s however with the added benefit of having a durable glass covering over the screen, Plasma TV’s offer up excellent viewing angles and deep colour reproduction, as well as a much higher refresh rate than that of the more modern LCD and LED TV’s on the market.
LCD; This is perhaps the most known about type of TV, due to the screen type being utilized in televisions of multiple screen size. LCD TV’s have become extremely affordable in the past 4 years replacing Plasma TV’s at shop fronts. LCD TV’s are generally slightly thinner than their Plasma competitors, however they have one fundamental flaw; their black reproduction is not as great due to the high powered fluorescent lighting that powers the matt display.
LED; This is the latest type of display technology to come to televisions in the UK and it is also the most power efficient, however there is a common mistake people make about them. LED TV’s are quite simply LCD TV’s yet rather than use fluorescent bulbs to backlight them, they use LED’s, which are more energy efficient. LED TV’s are however thinner and lighter than Plasma and traditional LCD options, offering up a deeper colour experience overall.
